First efficient hybrid LEDs
In collaboration with the groups of Norbert Koch and Fritz Henneberger (both HU Physics) as well as Seth Marder (Georgia Institute of Technology) we have been able to construct the first hybrid inorganic-organic light-emitting diode. By hybridizing ladder-type spiro-quaterphenyl molecules with ZnO and using an organometallic reagent to adjust the energy level alignment, the exciton generated in the inorganic semiconductor can transfered in a resonant fashion to the organic emitter. Such hybrid approach combining "the best of both worlds" should lead to devices with much improved efficiencies. The work has just appeared in Nature Communications.
