Boosting switch performance

In a comprehensive investigation Alex has shown that azobenzene Z→E isomerization can be triggered either by reduction and oxidation using electron and hole catalysis, respectively. The latter allows to use red-shifted photo-oxidants and thus to switch azobenzenes in the far red with quantum yields exceeding unity.
