Bistable pKa-switches

Exploiting aromatic stabilization of the corresponding base allowed us to switch between thermally stable diarylethene isomers and thereby modulate their acidity (pKa values) by light. This work provides a universal basis to remotely control biological processes - an avenue that we are currently exploring - and will appear in an upcoming issue of Angewandte Chemie.
